Montreal's 'Le Café-Graffiti' Offers Incredible Workshops for Students of All Ages

When most people think of graffiti, they imagine vandalism, usually in the form of "tags," or a stylized writing of a person's name. While tags are probably the most popular forms, graffiti art is so much more than that. Street art is an incredibly diverse and varied art movement and a way for many young artists to express themselves while underlying social and political messages. Graffiti, is in fact, nothing new and has existed in many forms, from when man lived in caves through to ancient civilizations and on to present day. It’s an art form that will never go away which is why we highly recommend that during your next educational tour, you make a stop at Le Café-Graffiti here in Montreal.

Founded in 1997, at the request of several graffiti artists, Le Café-Graffiti was initially formed to give young artists a place to practice their craft without having to vandalize public and private property. However, it became more than that – a safe haven where young artists meet, discuss and collaborate on various projects across the city. In addition, the Graffiti Café ensures the professional recognition of these young artists while helping them pursue their career in hopes of becoming the next Banksy or Olly Moss.

We recently had the opportunity to visit the workshop located in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve with some students travelling from New York City and we were amazed at not only how fun the workshops can be, but how informative they are. The instructors here really do specialize in Street & Graffiti Art and many of them have gone on to make a living selling their art pieces well within the thousands. And anyone familiar with the Graffiti scene might recognize some of the artists working there including world famous, Fabienne Nozerand, Skiz and Axe Graffiteur.

But what really took us by surprise when visiting the cafe for the first time was how charismatic, passionate and patient our instructor Alex was. By the time we had finished our one-hour workshop, at least five, if not six of the kids said they wished he was a fulltime teacher in their school. Alex is an incredible motivational speaker and did a great job in emphasizing the cultural impact of Graffiti art while encouraging the students to do their best without stressing over the results.

Le Café-Graffiti provides tailor-made projects for students of all ages. While we were there we had the chance to customize our own unique tag and apply it to apparel which we got to take home. Café Graffiti is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 17:00. Feel free to speak to your tour consultant to request a reservation.
